Where Not to Live

Sperling’s BestPlaces, which conducts studies around the US on a variety of location-based quality of life topics, like gasoline prices, air pollution levels and crime, has released a the following list of the country’s migraine “hot spots.”

  1. Cincinnati, OH
  2. Madison, WI
  3. Little Rock, AR
  4. Knoxville, TN
  5. St. Louis, MO
  6. Nashville, TN
  7. Johnson City, TN
  8. Chattanooga, TN
  9. Greenville, SC
  10. Canton, OH

The list was created by examining the number of prescriptions for migraine abortives per capita and the presence and degree of 31 lifestyle and environmental triggers. The first 16 factors were measures of mental and physical stress. “Known food triggers” accounted for the remaining 15 factors.

Identifying concentrated locations of migraineurs is an interesting idea, but from what I can glean from the press release, the methods don’t make for convincing data. Or maybe my bias against a blanket list of food triggers is coloring my opinion.

Ortho-McNeil sponsored the study; I wonder if they’ll actually use the data for marketing.

  1. You’ve got a lot of helpful information here! I have a CSA/assault survivor blog and website and I’m adding some info on survivor health issues. Migraines & other headaches–big survivor issue! So, these are good resources for me to know about. Thanks!
